"Stop. I want to tell u something."
"Really. I'm so privileged."
"Please, be serious. I really wanted to talk to you."
"Com' on. Speak up. I'm all ears."
"Actually. (Gosh! M so nervous). I wanted to..."
"Yes..."
"Umm..."
"Yes. What did you want?"
"Actually, I wanted your cell no."
"My cell no. (A little chuckle). Okay. You wanted my no. and you were so nervous. Well, its …”
“Wait. Please save it on my cell”
“Ok. As you wish”
I kept looking at his fingers as he calmly pressed the numbers.
“Thank you. Thank you very much”
“You….”
Well, he did say something. But I never heard. Not a word of it, but I could see him speaking. Gosh!!!
That evening was spent in utmost trepidation. Hundreds of times, I looked at the number but each time, I resisted my temptation. I knew not why, but I was afraid. Perhaps, I did not want to lose my little secret. Perhaps, I feared the most. But, he is so charming and he chats with me with such warmth. It could not be without something. He must have… And, at last I pressed the call key. But, lo. It was engaged. He was busy talking to someone. At this time. 10’o Clock at night. Damn it! Damn him.
Next moment, the cell phone was flying. Crashing onto the floor, it had split into three. Soon, it was joined by the pillow. The lamp followed suit. Tears were rolling. I started feeling uneasy.
Startled by the knocks on the door, I woke up. It was the milkman. Opening the door, he entered. Looking at the mess across the room, he moved around without uttering a word.
7:30. I had lots of time before office. Switching on FM 93.5, I started my day. The water was warm and by 8:15, the room was all neat and clean.
“Hey, you look great”. Maria greeted me.
“Thanks”. Smiling gratefully, I replied.
“Umm. In high spirits.” Jessie mumbled as I settled besides her.
“Good morning everybody”.
He was here. There were loud replies and I too added my feeble voice.
I had not noticed. He was standing behind me.
“Mansi, are you not feeling well.”
“No, nothing. I’m all right. What made you say so”
“Well, your coffee’s getting cold”
“Coffee. Ah! I’m sorry. I was too busy”. I began.
“No, you can leave it alone. It’s undrinkable by any standards now. Come with me, we will sip together in the cafĂ©.”
“No, its all right.”
“Come on, dear”.
He pulled me along. I could not resist.
“Ok Just wait a sec.”
